The Bendigo goldfields are hot, dry country, and fire is the shadow over every summer here. The Bureau of Meteorology has Bendigo averaging only around 500mm of rain a year, with hot summer days well over 30 degrees, high fire danger, and the box-ironbark forest right on Junortoun’s doorstep. The 2009 Bendigo bushfire, on Black Saturday, ran through this eastern country and burned homes only a few kilometres from here, and it is why so much of our Junortoun work is about reducing risk before the season: removing dead and dying trees, clearing fuel, and creating defendable space around houses and sheds. We know the Country Fire Authority guidance for clearing around homes, and our arborist reports and consultation service can document what should stay and what should go, for council or insurance. When a tree does have to come out, the numbers matter. We grind stumps to around 300mm below ground so the block can be reworked or the ground made safe, and our chipper swallows limbs up to about 200mm through, so the arisings leave as clean mulch rather than a fire-hazard burn pile. For the big rural gums we rig and lower in sections, or use an elevated work platform for safe height access, and for the largest or most awkward removals near buildings and power we can bring in a crane. Our arborists hold AQF arborist qualifications, the business carries $20 million in public liability, and we have worked the Bendigo district for more than twelve years, so a Junortoun removal near a house, a shed or a boundary is planned and executed properly, not improvised. We also check for overhead powerlines on these exposed blocks and coordinate with the network where a tree sits inside the clearance zone, because a gum failing into a powerline on a total fire ban day is exactly the scenario this district cannot afford.
